The name of the real life cargo ship that appears in the movie was the 'Capitaine Wallis' which was formerly known until 1977 as 'Cypria'. The vessel was actually constructed in 1964 which was about two years after the film's source novel had been first published in 1962. Moreover, both the movie's story and source novel story are set during the 1950s.
