In the novel, the monster's horrible appearance is not derived from being green or having neck bolts or scars from being sewn together, but rather, by having very pale, translucent skin, producing the nightmarish effect of showing what is beneath it. It would have been impossible to show this effect in a movie, so the makeup that was used makes sense.
