When Jackson Maine is at the rehab facility, he takes up swimming laps as exercise. This is a nod to the fact that in both È nata una stella (1937) and È nata una stella (1954), his analog Norman Maine commits suicide by claiming he is going for a recreational swim in the ocean but really deliberately drowning himself.
