Leonard Nimoy developed the story for this film, and under other circumstances would have directed it as well. However, Nimoy and the executives at Paramount Studios agreed that hiring him to direct would have angered William Shatner, who was still sore at the failure of his own directorial effort, Star Trek V - L'ultima frontiera (1989).
