The original ending had Frost becoming La Magra and unleashing the Blood Tide, which washes over the city and turns everyone it touches into vampires. The film ended with the vampires winning, having caused the vampire apocalypse. It was a set up for a proposed sequel where Blade and Karen would travel around, hitting and destroying vampire food storage areas. The filmmakers didn't know if there would be a sequel, so it was changed.
