The casting of Eli Wallach as a Mexican is often condemned as racist. It is unlikely that a white man would have been cast in an Hispanic role in the modern era. This was acceptable at the time because Wallach was Jewish and not considered properly "white" in the 1960s, and his dark skin and black hair allowed him to play a wide range of ethnic roles.
