A fan theory courtesy of Screen Rant established that Thanos had been waiting for Infinity War's events to take possession of the Infinity Stones because he could has been stopped by the more powerful than him Odin, The Ancient One and Ego, preventing him to fulfill his plan. With the deaths of these three just before of Infinity War (The Ancient One in Doctor Strange (2016), Odin in Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Ego in Guardiani della Galassia Vol. 2 (2017)) Thanos was free to get Infinity Stones without their intervention.
