Originally Gorosaurus was on the original roster of monsters to appear during pre-production announcements (along with King Ghidorah by name.) The original roster included Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, Anguirus, Gigan, King Ghidorah, Kiryu, Manda, Kumonga, Kamacurus, Minya, King Caesar, Ebirah, Hedorah and Gorosaurus. However, Toho had reacquired the rights from the 1998 Godzilla film and decided to switch out Gorosaurus (who would have instead fought Godzilla in Sydney) with Zilla.
