Originally the Creeper design had male genitalia. These were discarded by Francis Ford Coppola and designer Brad Parker, who advised Victor Salva that a creeper with genitals would divert public attention. Coppola asked Salva if he was willing to risk losing the audience's focus and attention whenever the naked Creeper was shown below the waist. In the end it was decided to place strands of hair on his crotch so as not to lose the idea that it was a male monster.
