For the fantastic scenes where Mary Poppins takes the Banks children on extraordinary adventures, writer, producer, and director Rob Marshall decided to use the traditional style of hand-drawn animation, as he wanted the audience to regain the nostalgia of Mary Poppins (1964). More than 70 animators, some of whom were even long retired (in their 70s, 80s; one was age 90), were recruited to design and create the animated sequences for 16 months.
