Sir Ridley Scott described the Engineers as "tall, elegant dark angels." Some early designs made them look more elephant-like to conform with the appearance of the dead Space Jockey in Alien (1979), but it was later decided that this look would be their exoskeleton suits, with the Engineers inside looking more humanoid. Concept designers Neville Page and Carlos Huante cite classical statues of Greco-Roman gods, the works of J.W. Turner (a painter whose trademark was brightness) and William Blake (a painter who employed religious symbolism), the Statue of Liberty, Michaelangelo's David, and Elvis Presley as visual influences for the design of the Engineers.
