In The Matrix, the human resistance reveal that they do not know what the year is, but that it is closer to 2199 than 1999. In The Matrix Reloaded, it is revealed that the resistance has been created and destroyed five times, each cycle lasting approximately a century, and therefore it is likely to be hundreds of years later than this.
