Although ordered the German destroyer Z49 was never actually built in real life. It was originally intended to be the fourth of five Type 1936C-class destroyers but only the first two ships (Z46 & Z47) we're laid down and work was halted in 1942. The order for the remaining three ships was cancelled in 1943. The unfinished Z46 and Z47 were eventually destroyed by advancing allied troops in 1945. The Italian tug ITS Proteo served as a stand in for the German destroyer Z49 in the film.
