Rian Johnson sat down for conversations with several people after accepting the directing job, from Lawrence Kasdan to J.J. Abrams, but he also spent a couple weeks hanging out with Rick Carter who's kind of an "unseen Yoda" on these films. " if you know Rick you know that when you're talking with him about story you aren't talking about action scene, set pieces, toys.. you're talking about what matters to you in the story, you're talking about the mystic stuff behind it all". It was important that he received the permission to start with the film, and he credits Carter with essentially giving his blessing.
