Originally, the film was intended to make Anne Heche, then a virtually unknown actress, into the "It girl" of the period. In the same week she was cast - verbally, but not yet signed - Touchstone Pictures fired Heche after she made a red carpet appearance on the arm of the most famous lesbian in the world, Ellen DeGeneres, whom she had met just days earlier. (From a business standpoint, studio heads now felt that trying to sell Heche as a pinup type would be a waste of investment.) Harrison Ford used his influence to get Heche hired back, but the damage to her career was already done. Except for Il tempo di decidere (1998), made immediately after this, Heche never got another starring role in a feature film.
