The symbol that's shown throughout the film, particularly on the necklace that Annie and her mother wear, is a slightly different version of the real seal of the demon Paimon as shown in old texts of demonology. The most noticeable difference is that the real symbol has four figures instead of the film's three. The symbol was changed for the film because it's considered bad luck to use real demonic/religious symbolism in films. Films who've used real demonic/religious symbols (The Exorcist, The Omen, Rosemary's Baby) have infamously been plagued by accidents and hardship.
