In the novel, Ma had a previous pregnancy that Old Nick had also caused by raping her, but the baby died soon after birth. Ma, believing the death was Old Nick's fault, refused his help when Jack was born. For the rest of her time in Room, she prevents him from touching or even looking at Jack.
