Development of the picture resurfaced in 1973 after a number of deferrals and postponements. According to an article published in the 10th October 1973 issue of show-business trade-paper 'Variety', Edgar J. Scherick had now acquired the movie rights to the novel and was attached as the producer. The project then was part of a multi-picture deal between the Columbia Pictures studio and Lawrence Gordon who was a former Vice President at American International Pictures (AIP).
