May Calamawy received a direct message on her Instagram account from Moon Knight's consulting producer, Sarah Goher, which informed her that she was on their radar for a lead role that would later become Layla El-Faouly. About a week later Calamawy auditioned for the part, and two weeks later she had a chemistry read with Oscar Isaac, and three days later she got the part.
