Erik Jan Hanussen (Daniel Brühl) and Mata Hari (Valeria Pachner) were real life people. Hanussen was a mysterious figure, and little of him is known before 1920. A hypnotist and mentalist, he did have contact with Adolf Hitler, and apparently coached him for public appearances. In 1933, Hanussen was assassinated by the Nazis and hastily buried in a secret location. Mata Hari was the nickname of one Margaretha Zelle. Born in the Netherlands, she was indeed a dancer and courtesan who used her position to extract military secrets, either by seduction or bribery, although the real Mata Hari was active in France, not America. Captured in 1917, she was executed by firing squad. Interestingly, both Hanussen and Mata Hari's deaths are shrouded in mystery, and led to some historians to believe they escaped or were the scapegoats to cover wider conspiracies.
