Tom McLoughlin was originally only hired to write the film, but producer Don Behrns pushed for him to be allowed to direct as well. Behrns later said that the studio would otherwise have probably re-hired Venerdì 13: il terrore continua (1985) director Danny Steinmann, whom he refused to work with again following their poor previous working relationship on La scala buia (1980).
