Marie Antoinette's second son Louis XVII died in 1795, but there were persistent rumors that he had secretly escaped from prison. During the 19th century, there were many impostor pretenders claiming to be Louis XVII. The most notable among them were the German inventor Karl Wilhelm Naundorff (c. 1785-1845) and the Canadian clergyman Eleazer Williams (1788-1858).
