While the Japanese lost two destroyers, they also lost a submarine indirectly during the battle. The submarine Ro-66 (1,004 tons with a crew of 48) was recharging her batteries on the surface about twenty-five miles southwest of Wake Island when she collided with another Japanese submarine, Ro-62. The former quickly sank with the loss of all but three men rescued by the Ro-62. Some sources claim Wake Island's VMF-211 Wildcats had previously bombed and damaged the submarine as a reason why she was surfaced at the time of collision.
