In the prequel short film Blade Runner: Black Out 2022 (2017), the efforts of the Replicants to fight for freedom include the redirection of a nuclear weapon in space to generate an electromagnetic pulse over Los Angeles. This, along with the simultaneous destruction of a number of major data storage centers, is what created the "Blackout" referred to in the movie, in which almost all data concerning the registration of Replicants was wiped out. This was done because by 2022, public distrust of Tyrell's Nexus 8 Replicants had become so severe that people were randomly executing them, so the Blackout allowed them to avoid identification and go into hiding. The Blackout subsequently led to a ban in Replicant production.
