There is a dispute over the casting of this film, specifically whether Michael Ontkean and Harry Hamlin were the first choices to play the two male lead roles. While one producer on the film said that they were, another one noted that the script was offered to at least 15 leading male actors of the time, including Harrison Ford and Michael Douglas - all of whom passed on the film. What both producers agreed on is that, at a certain point, the film's subject matter led to many other male actors telling them that not only would they pass on the role, but they would be angry if it was revealed that they even TALKED about the film with the producers. Ontkean and Hamlin were exceptions to this, as both actors immediately said they were very interested in being cast as soon as they were contacted and shown scripts.
