Rick Baker was attached to do the makeup effects for the film following his success on Il Grinch (2000). Baker did designs and even a makeup test on himself (as he often does), but due to Mike Myers's difficult behavior during preproduction meetings, he left the project. A bake off was held for the job and Steve Johnson, who was one of Baker's earliest apprentices, got the position. The final makeup does include many elements from Baker's original design, but simplified to just a small muzzle appliance, paint, and a cowl with animatronic ears.
