In the TV series, from the beginning the Murtaugh's wealth is explained by Trish clearly being a Lawyer. In the films, it is at first intimated that perhaps Roger is on the take, and later revealed that Trish is secretly a highly successful author of trashy romance novels, which she writes under a pen name.
