Suchet was recommended for the part by Dame Agatha Christie's family, who had seen his performance in the mid-80s BBC series Blott on the Landscape (1985). Curiously, that series was also made by Picture Partnership Productions, later re-named Carnival Films, who are later credited with developing, and producing Poirot with the ITV network.
