The train crash depicted in Hugo's dream was the Montparnasse derailment that occurred on October 22, 1895. The train was running late and was speeding to make up for time. On top of that, the brakes were not applied and the train plowed through the station, much as depicted in the movie. The train speeding into the station is not a goof as this is what actually happened.
