Prior to joining the series, Frazer Hines, Barry Letts, and Roger Delgado had starred in The Silver Sword (1957). In the series, Hines played a character called Jan. In the "New Adventures of Doctor Who" novel "Love and War" by Paul Cornell, the 7th Doctor's companion Ace falls in love with an ill-fated nomadic human space traveler called Jan.
