The armor worn by Macbeth, Banquo, and most of the Scots in the film is known as a gambeson. It is a heavily padded garment which was worn during the middle ages as a protection during combat. The padding would soften the impact of a weapon, protect from cuts, and keep the wearer warm. It was the most common protection worn during the middle ages, as it was cheaper than metal armor and could be afforded by commoners. It was also used as a complement to metal armor such as mail.
