The T-X was originally written to be a male character. Vin Diesel was the studio's initial first choice, while backup choices included Kane Hodder, Andrew Bryniarski, Shaquille O'Neal and Dwayne Johnson ; the role was even considered for rapper 50 Cent in what would be his breakout performance. It was later when they decided to rewrite the role for a female actor, and Famke Janssen, Jennifer Lopez, and former WWF wrestler Chyna (Joanie Laurer) were all considered. Laurer's name came into the mix when she was recommended for the part by Arnold Schwarzenegger during an interview prior to filming. However, it was Schwarzenegger himself who later got to pick Kristanna Loken for the part of the T-X.
