Tyrese Gibson once joked that the only place the F&F franchise had yet to visit was outer space. In response, Justin Lin decided to do exactly that: attempt to add a sequence set in outer space. Although he noted that he "wasn't sure if we were ever gonna be able to do it," the sequence he envisioned ended up in the movie largely as Lin originally envisioned it.
