One of the implicit examples of the divide between rich and poor in South-Korea is illustrated by the fact that Seong Gi-hun and Cho Sang-woo's mothers are still street vendors at their advanced age. South Korea's retirement system wasn't formalized until the 1990s, so many elderly people have no pension and are forced to keep working until their death.
