In 1782, Marie Antoinette managed to alienate many courtiers by appointing her favorite Yolande de Polastron, Duchess of Polignac (1749-1793) in the prestigious and lucrative position of the Governess of the Children of France (responsible for the upbringing of the king's children). The position was typically reserved for women from the highest-ranking nobility of France, while Polignac was considered a mere upstart.
