Details of Asami's backstory and troubled childhood were more descriptive in the novel than they were in the film, which left her backstory relatively vague, with the details only implied. Asami as a child was abused repeatedly by her father, who was crippled and had no feet. She suffers PTSD as a result of the abuse. As an adult, any man who hurt, betrayed, or lied to her, would in her eyes be just as bad as her father. Punishing them by sawing off their feet was because she felt they deserved to look like him as well, crippling them. Her modus operandi would be to cut off their feet and then leave them, and she rarely killed her victims. This resulted in a plot hole though, as she was somehow able to evade the police even though her victims almost always survived her attacks.
