Lance Reddick is cast as "Charon" in all three John Wick films. In Greek and Roman mythology, "Charon" is "The Boatman"; after death, he took one's soul across the River Styx to the "Gates of Judgement". Coins were placed on the eyes of the departed, in order to pay "The Boatman" for passage. This is still (occasionally) done today.
