In a November 1999 interview with the Los Angeles Times, New Line Cinema CEO Robert Shaye commented that executive producer Michael De Luca had been "seduced" by Warren Beatty into greenlighting the movie before there was a completed, filmable screenplay. Beatty issued a cease-and-desist letter in response, igniting a round of public finger-pointing and blame-shifting between various people involved in the film.
