Rose McGowan felt the line "Life's a bitch, then you die" was a cliché and didn't want to say it, but writer/director Darren Stein insisted on it. McGowan decided to recite the line with as little verve as possible in the hope that it would get cut, but since the exchange between Courtney and Julie was shot in a single take, they couldn't edit it out. Many viewers thought her blasé delivery was intentional and the line has become an oft-quoted fan favorite.
