Despite the film's dark nature, there are a few moments of hope that counterbalance the bleak atmosphere. For example: During the scene where Fitzgerald and Bridger come upon a destroyed village, there are many bodies sprawled around. The sole survivor is a woman who was hiding in a hut. When Bridger sees her, he automatically leaves food for her. He does this out of sympathy. When Glass meets Hikuc after coming upon him obtaining a piece of meat from a bison, Hikuc shares the meat with him despite being cautious of him. Throughout the sequence between Hugh and Hikuc, they grew close.During the scene where Glass comes across the camp of the French soldiers, he sees that they have kept Powaqa as a sex slave and killed Hikuc judging by his stolen horse being among the other horses in the camp. Glass rescues Powaqa and allows her to take her revenge against her rapist.
