When working on the previous Matrix films, Lana Wachowski had everything planned out with storyboards, and used as little natural lighting as possible. She notes that this film employed a different approach that was far more spontaneous and with very long takes. By literally holding the cameraman by the shoulders, she would control the focus of attention on the fly, requiring the actors to be on their A game at all times. She also avoided using natural light in most cases, preferring complete control without having to worry about time or weather.
