Between Seasons 1 and 2, the showrunners announced that Erica Tazel's character, Barbara Kolstad, would be returning for the season 2 premiere but Tazel would no longer be a series regular. Robert King told The Hollywood Reporter, "Michelle and I had built a character [Kolstad] that we didn't kind of feel we had enough directions to go with its future. We felt like we had written a character into a box. Part of it was to avoid imitating what we did during Good Wife when we found that we were using kind of the same muscles." At the same time, the Kings announced that Audra MacDonald would join the cast of The Good Fight in a role she had played in one season 4 episode of The Good Wife, Liz Lawrence, the ex-wife of regular character Adrian Boseman (Delroy Lindo).
