Al Corley took the controversial role of Steven Carrington to exploit the social impact of playing an openly gay character in a prime-time drama. He quit when the show's producers caved into network demands that Steven's homosexuality be "cured." Jack Coleman was hired to replace Corley. To explain the change in actors, a storyline was created in which Steven was in an oil rig explosion and required extensive plastic surgery on his face. Producers later restored Steven's homosexuality. Scenes with his lovers were tame compared to the heterosexual characters due to network standards and practices at the time; not even kissing was permitted. Coleman left the show in 1988. Corley would return to the role in the mini-series Dynasty: ultimo atto (1991).
