The word "Pontifex" is a word used to refer to a high order of priests in Rome. It can also be literally translated to mean "bridge-maker," or a man who negotiates with God. The Pontifex Institute in the film echoes these motifs--they act as "priests" who call the empty man, they build the legend of the empty man around bridges, and they receive messages from the empty man like he is a God.
