Early in the series we see a flashback to the early years of Toby and Rachel's marriage. Toby is complaining to Libby about having to see so many plays for Rachel's job, and he says, "We go to the theater all the time, and then you get out and it's 11:00 and the only place that's open is this [restaurant], Joe Allen..." This is an early, albeit subtle, indication that Toby is both inattentive to the details of Rachel's profession and a potentially unreliable narrator of their stories. While it is true that Joe Allen is a real mainstay pre- and post-theater restaurant in the theater district, it is untrue that it is "the only place that's open"; especially pre-COVID (which is when this series is set) the Broadway area had dozens of restaurants that remained open very late specifically to cater to a post-theater clientele--something that, the show implies, Toby would have known if he had shared his wife's interests in either theater or food.
