Burt Reynolds came up with his own 'dog voice' for Charlie, which Don Bluth described as 'a put-on cartoon character voice.' Bluth and the other directors politely tried to convince Reynolds to use his natural speaking voice for Charlie, but Reynolds insisted he liked his dog-voice better. When Dom DeLuise was called in he promised Bluth he'd get Reynolds to use his natural voice. Once the two actors began recording their lines together DeLuise began calling Reynolds out over the voice he was using and told him bluntly, 'I'm Dom, you're Burt. Don't be creative. Just say the lines, okay? Don't make me look bad.' Following DeLuise's advice Reynolds used his actual voice, and as they played off each other the natural rapport the animators wanted developed. After finishing Reynolds told Don Bluth he was right, and his own voice sounded better.
