Soon after his daughter Katie's murder, Jimmy Markum says to himself that while he doesn't know how, he himself helped cause it. In the end, his hunch is proven correct: Ray, whose father Jimmy had murdered, and whose brother fills in as father figure, is provoked into attacking Katie when he learns his brother is eloping. An elopement that would be unnecessary had Jimmy not despised Ray's brother. Also the gun used by his pal to murder Katie, came into their hands after the murder of its owner, Ray's father.
