Due to Thomas J's death towards the end of the film, the producers and studio were at first reluctant to cast Macaulay Culkin in the role because of his enormous popularity in Home Alone (1990) and his pop culture effect on the youth of America at the time. They worried the film's box office performance could suffer because parents wouldn't take their kids' to a film where their favorite actor dies, and also worried it would genuinely upset kids that the hero from Home Alone dies in a movie. Elijah Wood was then briefly considered for the role of Thomas J, but Macaulay Culkin's father, Kit, insisted Columbia Pictures cast him in the role. His request was honored and the film grossed $59 million domestically, a dramatic drop in numbers compared to Home Alone's domestic gross of $285 million, but was considered a success nonetheless considering the film's budget was $17 million.
