The role of Lieutenant Dan Kaffee was originally played on Broadway by Tom Hulce. He was later replaced by Timothy Busfield. The role of Colonel Nathan Jessep was played by Stephen Lang, and also by Michael O'Hare and Ron Perlman. The only actor from the Broadway cast to reprise his role in the film was Joshua Malina, a close friend of Aaron Sorkin's, who plays Jack Nicholson's assistant in one scene.
