An excised plot thread involves Freddie tagging along with his cousin Bob in a quest through the NYC sewer system in search of a supposed hidden treasure. This section was heavily influenced by a passage in Thomas Pynchon's novel "V" which depicts a group of former sailors hunting crocodiles that are rumored to swim through the sewers. Paul Thomas Anderson wrote the screenplay for this film at the same time he was adapting another Pynchon novel, "Inherent Vice", which would become his next film.
